Books and articles, including scholarly and simple
I compiled a list of about 500 good published sources in the process of researching my book. I cut that in half, and published the best 250 or so in the back of the book (it runs 16 pages in small font.) Of those, I picked approximately the top 50, and posted them on the Online Columbine Bibliography.
That bibliography contains what I consider your two to three hundred best options for further reading. Most items are linked—a handful are not available online. You can browse the book at most any library or bookstore, to find entries not included here.
The biggest problem with so much information is finding what you need, so we organized them into 18 categories, which get pretty specific. They include:
-
The Killers: Evidence Released
-
The Killers: Profiles & Childhood History
-
Psychopathy
-
Juvenile Psychopathy
-
Psychopathy Treatment
-
Survivors: Memoirs & Interview Transcripts
-
Survivors: News Accounts
-
(etc. There are a dozen more categories.)
One of the most common questions I get is:
What one book should I read next to understand the killers?
That's easy. Start with Dr. Robert Hare's classic psychopathy book, Without Conscience. It's an easy read, intended for a general audience, but not dumbed down.
